It's all in a name

Ash and I decided to start a parenting blog now that we have three months until our son is born. I thought it would be a good idea to give you a little background to the site name. One night, Ash and I set aside two hours on a work night to go through a list of baby names. When we first found out we were pregnant tons of girl names came to us. There were at least eight names that we both loved and thought would be perfect for our little baby. From the start of my pregnancy I was convinced we were having twin boys because I had a dream about twin boys before we found out we were pregnant, so I took that as a sign that I was carrying twin boys. At our 19 week ultrasound, the sonographer saw "boy parts" as she proclaimed! And we did too! So here we were with lots of girl names and not one boy name that we both could agree on.

The night we searched through the book we decided that we just don't like boy names. Most of them suck. They are either too plain, too southern, too weird or too not something we'd name our baby. We both were frustrated so I randomly opened to a page and said, "Look, some mom opens to this page and sees the name Demorris and says Demorris is such a beautiful name let's name our son that." We both thought it was hilarious and proceeded to laugh for the next 10 minutes before we decided to see what the meaning of Demorris was. Most names have a meaning like Amanda means she who must be loved and Ashley means ash tree meadow. Well the meaning next to Demorris...wait for it. De+Morris. We could not contain ourselves and immediately texted a few friends telling them we picked a name... Demorris. After we received no responses, we finally talked to our friends Nick and Gina and all belly laughed for hours.

The nickname for Demorris would clearly be Dem. And we spent hours making jokes like. "Dem downstairs." "Where Dem parents?" "I'm with Dem. Dem who? Dem Llorens." Countless jokes and hours of fun. Well the name stuck, and we've been calling the baby Demorris for months as a placeholder until we can find a better name for him. I have to admit, the name has grown on me. I find myself saying "How are you feeling Demorris?" And "I love you, Demorris."

This blog is dedicated to stories about our experiences with pregnancy and parenting. We can't wait to share the biggest adventure of our lives with you!

  3. Well, Morris is the usual medieval spelling of Maurice, and Maurice is, apparently the patron saint of infantry soldiers: "MAURICE
    Gender: Masculine
    Usage: English, French
Pronounced: MOR-is (English), mo-REES (French) [key]
From the Roman name Mauricius, a derivative of MAURUS. Saint Maurice was a 3rd-century Roman soldier from Egypt. He and the other Christians in his legion were supposedly massacred on the orders of emperor Maximian for refusing to worship Roman gods. Thus, he is the patron saint of infantry soldiers.
This name was borne by a 6th-century Byzatine emperor. Another notable bearer was Maurice of Nassau (called Maurits in Dutch), a 17th-century prince of Orange who helped establish the Dutch Republic. The name has been used in England since the Norman conquest, usually in the spelling Morris or Moris."
