In April, we got a jogging stroller, and I became a lot more serious about taking long walks with Noah to help get me back into shape. As far as cardio, I think I'm probably in some of the best shape I've been in since high school. (Four years to recover from a knee injury/surgeries in college meant that I wasn't super active during those years.)
Somewhere around 4.5 years ago, I took a job in DC. And that my friends was the decline of my physical health. I worked too many hours, I commuted a ton, and I had no time for exercise or cooking. It meant I put on a ton of weight. Like you are 9 months pregnant sort of weight gain.
By the time I got pregnant with Noah, I weighed more than I should have. So during my pregnancy with him, I developed Gestational Diabetes which may or may not have had anything to do with my pre-pregnancy weight. I ate super healthy and maintained my blood sugar level with diet only. I never had to take any medicine orally or otherwise. After Noah's birth, I ate a milkshake (doctor's orders), and when I tested my blood sugar an hour later, my sugars were back to normal.
BUT, my doctor warned that Noah and I are both at a higher risk than the average person for developing type 2 diabetes later in life. My mom's whole side of the family has it, so I imagine I'm even more at risk. I hated testing my blood sugar 4 times a day while I was pregnant with Noah so if I can avoid it, I don't ever want to deal with needles again.
So this is where you come in. I need your help. I can't do this alone, without lots of support. I set a goal after Noah was born to get back to my pre-DC weight. I think this is very attainable since I'm so much happier now, I spend all day with an adorable toddler, I cook dinner almost every night (and breakfast and lunch most days), and I exercise at least 3 times a week, sometimes 6 or 7.
Recently, I decided that if I want to get serious about getting back to my pre-DC weight, I need to add a bit of jogging to my routine. So I plan to update folks on my efforts along with my stories about the future President of 2048. (Don't forget to register before then!)
This week, my parents were visiting, so I did a lot of eating and not a lot of exercising, but yesterday, I walked 1 mile, then jogged 2.5, then walked 1 more carrying Noah.
Today, I jogged 1.5, and then walked 1.7.
I need your help. A lot of you email me personally or im me or send me other messages about my posts. I rarely have comments on here. Can you leave me supportive comments on the blog when I post about fitness? I feel like it's easier for me to have one place to go to read words of encouragement.
So let me know that you're out there and you're going to help support me on this journey. I want to be around a long time for Noah, and I want to make sure that that time is spent doing fun, healthy things together.
Great job. got a great tip from my brother's girlfriend that's a trainer...Ideal water consumption is your weight in pounds divided in half. That's a lot of water!
ReplyDeleteThanks G! I've been adding more water for Noah and me while we're out. ;)
ReplyDeletethat's a great plan and you're already starting off awesome! 4.5 miles yesterday? that's impressive :) i'm definitely behind you all the way and i know you can do whatever you put your mind to! when i come to visit i'll join you if you want (or not if you prefer to not work out with other people!) love you :)
ReplyDeleteI'm always up for company! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed that you exercise so often - that's a wonderful foundation to have and it will help you immensely to reach your goal!
ReplyDeleteBest of luck, and I will definitely keep making encouraging comments!
Thank you! I appreciate it. Right now, I take advantage of the fact that Noah likes to ride in the jogging stroller and look around. I realize he won't be a willing participant eventually. ;)
ReplyDeleteI would love to help! I saw you post this in #mamavation and thought I'd check it out. :) Good luck on your journey! You can do this!
ReplyDeleteyou will do amazing and we will be good motivation for one another! fight the avalere weight :)
ReplyDelete@Roxy Thanks for coming through to help me on my journey!
ReplyDelete@Molly LOL, and yes, let's keep encouraging each other. Thanks for the support!
I'm with Molly - fight the Avalere weight! Although not sure if I can keep blaming them since it has been two years since I left, lol. But I want to come up and go jogging with you, I'll bring some fruit or something this time to snack on instead of cupcakes. :) Good luck!
ReplyDeleteAL/MB/KV need to doubly support me in my quest against my Avalere 15; we can do it!
ReplyDeleteI am so excited for you Amanda!!! I am going to do this with you from Ohio ;) Do you want me to send you my workout spreadsheet? I think its fun to track your progress on and keeps you motivated. I am excited -- Good Luck!
ReplyDelete@Kristal Thanks, let's set up a time to jog together. I don't go far and I'm slow, but I'm working on it. :)
ReplyDelete@Allison We'll cheer you on too. Maybe you need to come out with K for a group jog?
@Becky Thanks for the support from Ohio!!!! Please send me the spreadsheet, I'd love to watch my progress! :)
I'm so proud how far you have come this past year! You are so good to go out and get cardio almost every day! I want to motivate you and hope to motivate myself in the process to be better. I need to lose my Avalere and baby weight and Liam is almost 1 already. I turn 30 this May and really want to make a serious goal to be back to my pre-dc weight. You really do motivate me to be better! Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteThanks K! Let's keep each other motivated for sure. I love how many of our former co-workers want to get back in shape! :)
ReplyDeleteI wish Liam and you lived closer so we could head out together!
Amanda, I am so proud of everything you've done for yourself to become the best version of yourself. On top of that, you have been able to create more happiness than you probably ever thought existed. Go on w/ your bad self and be strong! I too have been trying to keep on keepin' on, I'm up to cycling 6.5 mi 3 x's/wk.
ReplyDelete6 mi is approx. 1 walking mile so technically you're already passing me up. Keep at it!
- Mo Fitzgerald
Thanks for the support, Mo! Keep up your good work too. ;)
ReplyDeleteAmanda,
ReplyDeleteI definitely know how work can be all-consuming and leave little time for working out and eating healthy. As I get ready to start the new year with my little first graders, I'm once again striving for more balance between work and life. Best of luck to you in reaching your goal. It sounds like you're already off to a great start. Who knows, maybe Noah will be your future running buddy!
Run, Amanda, Run!
ReplyDeleteAlso -- I stole your idea, but gave you credit in my post :)
You should really join Daily Mile. You can track all of your walks and runs there (Google Maps is embedded so you can map your distances) and we can send each other corny "motivations" through the site. C'mon! You know you want to!
Yay, we're getting in shape. I plan to update here on Fridays with my progress. And hopefully eventually with a picture of the jeans that I never took the tag off of that I bought before I started working in DC. Maybe I'll fit in them at the end...
